Tips for Families Looking for a Luxury Property

Demand for luxury homes ($500k+) continues unabated in San Antonio, as families veer toward properties with high-end fixtures and finishes and sumptuous amenities. But within the inventory of luxury residences, there are differences and consulting an agent who specializes in luxury homes will make the pursuit of a new home an exciting process.

To be sure you find the property that best meets all your needs, keep the following advice in mind as you look for your next home:

Start with your desired location. You can find an amazing luxury home in almost any neighborhood, so think first about what general area you want to be in before you zero in on the style of home and specific features. What neighborhood is most appealing? What do you want to be close to? What side of town would you prefer to be on? Imagine your ideal street.

Know what you want. Next, talk with your real estate agent about what type of home is going to serve your family best. Some families will decide that they prefer to live in a Mediterranean style home, while others don’t care as much about the architecture as they prefer a four-car garage or 24-hour security. Think about what will help make it possible for you to truly enjoy your new home and put that on your list. Maybe a nanny suite makes more sense than a fitness or media room, for example. Or maybe a wine cellar is key, while country club access is not. There’s no wrong answer, but the more you think about what you are looking for early in your home search, the easier it will be to find your dream home.

Plan your future. It is very likely that you will find a home that is absolutely perfect for your current stage of life, whether you’re newlyweds or soon-to-be empty nesters. But think about what life will be like in the coming years, too. Will this home fit your needs then? For example, if you have young children, is the school district producing excellent results? If retirement is on the horizon, is access to a country club or private golf course important? Or does it not matter because you expect to move again in a few years?

Do your research. Once you find a luxury home that appears to be all that you’re after, find out all you can about it. Who was the builder, when was it built, and who are the neighbors, for example. See the home in person, preferably at different times of the day, rather than relying on photos alone. And have a home inspection done to prevent any major surprises later.

Take your time. Although the inventory of luxury homes is different than moderately priced homes, there may still be competition for the home, do not rush to make a decision, allow your experienced agent to guide you. Be sure that the property is going to be all that you’re looking for before you sign on the dotted line.
